Extraordinary isn't it, that a couple of weeks ago we had a story about flies apparently coming out of a heated school lunch, with the source being a blogger who heard from a source. It made the 6pm news. Yet over something as serious as these allegations of an MP, absolute silence from the mainstream media. They continue to prove why trust in them has declined to where people are simply finding much better alternatives for their news.

NZ's mainstream media has undergone a significant transformation, particularly with the shift from newsroom cadetships where young reporters were trained by hardened, investigative journalists, to polytechnic courses that shape the next generation of reporters within an academic framework. This transition has arguably led to a homogenisation of thought, where many young journalists enter the industry already aligned with the ideological positions of the current media establishment, rather than developing their perspectives through hands on investigative work.

As a result, instead of the relentless pursuit of truth that once defined journalism, much of today’s media landscape is shaped by perception management framing narratives that align with progressive causes while often sidelining dissenting viewpoints. This ideological conditioning, combined with the decline of traditional investigative rigor, raises concerns about the media’s role in fostering genuine public debate.

The erosion of balanced journalism risks severing NZ from its traditional values, as media discourse shifts toward a worldview that often rejects historical norms in favor of modern ideological trends. The question is, can independent journalism or alternative media platforms restore the role of investigative reporting, or has the mainstream media’s ideological entrenchment already set NZ on an irreversible course...
