As I see it, the reference to "impact on Maori" is part of the lowest common denominator level of public discourse that we have sunk to in the last decade. One of the main facilitators in this is the deterioration in the quality of journalism. I've noticed it particularly when it's trans issues being discussed. All sorts of claims are made about negative impacts on trans (eg the recent changes in sporting bodies guidelines) and reporters pretty much never dig into and ask specific questions about those claims. When I used to watch mainstream tv I'd be ranting at the screen asking all the questions the reporter wasnt!

Why take any personal responsibility when you can blame something else like the system for the outcome of your decisions.
