Would it be too much for Winston Peters to intervene and express our sentiments to China?

I heard him making comment yesterday, so that is positive. What is needed is more united statements from democratic countries, and not just foreign ministers but Prime Ministers too.

Text of WP's post on 'X' dated Feb 10 under the @NewZEalandMFA handle

"The prison sentence for Jimmy Lai is a step backwards for media freedom and freedom of speech in Hong Kong.

New Zealand has consistently called for the protection of fundamental human rights there and elsewhere, and will continue to do so.

-WP"

this was good to see and also what concrete actions come of it.

China is just as bad as Iran one eyed dogmatics

Yet we happily trade with China. No thoughts of embargos, sanctions or demanding they are banned from sporting fixture as with South Africa previously!

Oh that's right, we only imported a little bit of wine from SA back then! No real loss for us!

The hypocrisy is galling!

This was also the result of Lange giving America the 'middle finger', pushing us into the Communist camp!

Simon O'Connor's avatar

We should keep trading with China, but we should also be freely expressing our concerns and standing up for what we know to be right. Sadly, I think the current situation is that trade with China silences (or worse) our leadership.

The USA is New Zealand’s second largest trading partner. So, I am hoping we can get them as our highest trade partner but also becoming a closest ally like Australia is to us. Unfortunately, current Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has sense called the President a “r*cist” for that meme video, meaning there is no shot at achieving that goal of being a strong US ally under Luxon, but perhaps Winston Peters could make it happen??

Simon O'Connor's avatar

a challenge I often raised to the Americans is that they want us to rely less on China, and yet will not agree a free trade agreement with us.

We are all racists, including you, Harrison, its simply that most of us able to operate covertly when it comes to racism.

Harrison Moore's avatar

I don’t believe I’m a r*cist. Yes, I do say some controversy stuff but I have massive respect to all of mankind and God created each of us beautifully with unique personas.

I am also not afraid to speak out of what I think.

Mobley's avatar

You don't snigger at racist jokes or let the teller know you're offended to prove your love of man while secretly tucking the joke away to tell at some appropriate time? Of course you do... we all do it!

Mobley's avatar

Are you suggesting we don't trade with China? Duh!

Just shows how lucky we are to live in New Zealand, no matter what protests you come across that you may not be in favour of, you certainly are privileged to even have your own voice here.

Poor Jimmy, he simply was trying to use his voice that happened to be silenced by the CCP due it criticising the government.

Jimmy needs a jimmy so Jimmy can jimmy his way out.

I have plenty of my own thoughts on the Jimmy Lai situation and the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), but they all boil down to this,

neither can be seen in any way as "Pro-Democracy".

If Democracy means anything at all it means that the people (The Demos) decide how to rule themselves (The Kratos).

Any political party that receives or lobbies for support from a foreign power cannot be democratic.

The IPAC is not a democratic institution, it is an opaque self selected elite institution dedicated to maintaining "The Rules-based International Order".

But (and I have to thank Vladimir Putin for this one) what are these rules? Has anybody seen them?

The Rule of Law requires that laws are explicit and are equally applied in all circumstances. China interfering in the internal affairs of any nation should be condemned and stopped, and any nation interfering in the internal affairs of China should also be condemned and stopped.

That would be just and equitable, and that is what the IPAC will not do. This is also why "The Rules-based International Order" is totally fraudulent and utterly doomed, they demand others follow rules they won't follow themselves.

God, nature and reality won't permit that to survive for very long.

Well stated!

Western Liberal Democracies coming from a Judeo-Christian foundation are continually put under the spotlight, everyone else is given a pass because the Marxists thrive in the 'oxygen'; that is , the 'free speech' historically of real democracies!

Once communist, their job is done, so naturally they won't point out the absolute hypocrisy, corruption & lies of those nations!
