The motivations to stop using X - be it media or now the Clerk of New Zealand's parliament - are couched in moral terms by opponents, but it's all really about control, curation, and censorship.
I'm a bit of a newsaholic, and like many of the people you refer to in your piece I have grown steadily and strongly frustrated by the increasingly leftwing bias of the mainstream media (including our two TV news channels). I long for a simple presentation of 'whats new' without the reporters view or interpretation of it. I'll form my own opinion on that. Hence my decision recently to cancel subscriptions to both the NZ Herald and Sunday Star Times. I do miss the puzzles though!
Thanks John. I have appreciated many journalists too, including those who hold very different perspectives. I have also appreciated the work of the Clerk of the House. But with media, it is as you describe - it has gone very one way, and now also very moralising. I can understand why you would end those subscriptions and also relate to missing the puzzles. My wife has the solution - online puzzles, Sudoku, Scrabble, and more.
Thanks for the perspective, Simon. I was particularly struck by a couple points you make, "I would suggest, the best way to diminish X’s influence is to write better content. Content that doesn’t talk down on people, mocking those with different views, or simply censoring views they disagree with." and "The reasons being put forward to leave or ban X are cheap and fragile, and as such, most see the motivations behind such calls."
MSM and some in the political class are seemingly not cognisant of these points. The future looks very bleak for all of them.
worryingly, there is a growing gap between 'the people' and 'the elites', with the latter telling people up is down, black is white and so on. It is why, I think, we are seeing much frustration growing around democracies.
Some of us predate “news” on Twitter / X - and remember when it was just what was happening and the vibe of the people. That seeking to control the narrative weakens us all. It’s in this confluence of voices that we can find communities and collectives and find what we have in common more than what separates us. Let’s strive to foster more voices, than less, and where there isn’t one, let’s make sure that the quiet ones are heard, seen and understood.
eventually the Leviathan, the snake, will devour itself. But the process will not be easy for them or the sane. Put another way, there will be a readjustment, but I also expect a lot of grief.
By this logic, legacy media should be banned also as they have consistently & continually massaged the truth, leaving out relevant facts, & providing a jaundiced view of local & world events! This selective morality & calling out X is just patently 'ideological & tribal'!
The Left have been dominating the 'culture & ideological' wars for decades through the use & abuse of their 'fellow travellers' in the media, which has been distorting & corrupting our perception of reality; what is really going on in the world!
X is a threat to that worldview, so they want to shut it down!
This again is not rocket science!
The left wing bureaucracy in any country is working to undermine 'true democracy', from whence it originated! Our Judeo-Christian foundations! Leading us to a godless authoritarian neo-feudal 'Brave New World'!
This again is Satan manipulating people & the truth as in the Garden!
The Platform and Duncan Garner are available. Stuff is stuffed and not worth the $1 paid for it
Yes, lots of options - those two are good as well.

precisely - more voices, not fewer.
As the snake continues to eat its tail the Clerk oroves to be a Fool.
When will the turned tide grow strong enough to rid us of the over empowered woke?
